Jets sack NY winemakers

16 Jun

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ — Many New Yorkers are rabid fans of the New York Jets even though the National Football League team plays its home games in New Jersey.

The Jets blew a chance to score a public relations coup with such folk, as well as neglecting to try helping fellow New York businesses.

The problem? The team’s new official wine.

The team today announced it has begun taking orders for its new, limited release commemorative wine, called “Jets Uncorked.” The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon was created to help the team celebrate the opening of the New Meadowlands Stadium it shares with the Giants.

“We didn’t want to simply slap our logo on a wine,” said Matt Higgins, the team’s executive vice president for business operations. “We wanted to make one from scratch.”

So, they did, by ignoring New York’s 280-plus wineries, instead checking out eight California wineries before selecting Napa Valley winemaker Marco DiGiulio and the lifestyle marketing agency Wine By Design.

The wine is available for $27.99 on the team’s website. DiGiulio said about 8,000 cases were made, and several Manhattan restaurants, such as Nobu, will also carry it.
