Take the Cooperstown Beverage Trail, for example. With a winery, a cidery and two breweries as its members, it straddles categories. And, despite its name, is classified as a cuisine trail. Not only that, it is the state’s first cuisine trail.
The Trail organizers, who have built on the Cooperstown area’s history as a onetime major hops-growing area and with a culture of producing various beverages, have set up programs which allow visitors to experience food and drink tastings.
New York’s Farm, Apple and Cuisine Trails Designation Program was created under sponsoring legislation by Assemblyman Bill Magee and Senator Bill Larkin. It is managed by the state Department of Agriculture and Markets to promote greater agricultural marketing and promotional opportunities for agricultural producers located in the areas of such trails.
The participating Central New York establishments:
Fly Creek Cider Mill – A 153-year-old, water-powered cider mill. Daily tastings of more than 40 specialty foods, including fresh fudge, aged cheddar cheese, salsa, apple wines and hard ciders, are offered.
Brewery Ommegang – The Belgian-style brewery, for which ground was broken in the fall of 1997, has developed a national reputation and is a regular winner in brewing competitions.
Cooperstown Brewing Company – The 16-year-old facility brews premium ales, porters, and stouts using two-row English barley malts, West Coast hops and English Ringwood yeast.
Bear Pond Winery – The farm winery is located on a hillside just outside Cooperstown. It is celebrating its 10th anniversary.
