Dept. (store) of Cask Beer opening in NYC’s Chelsea

NEW YORK — Anyone who misses patronizing the old B. Altman department store will have the chance to reminisce about the place, although this time the reason will be to sample cask beers.

The Get Real NY Craft Beer & Food Festival, set for the weekend of September 25-26, will involve a lineup of about 80 cask brews, food from more than 20 New York restaurants, plus beer seminars and brewers themselves on hand to meet and greet. The specific lineup of brews and chefs will be available online once it is formed up, say the organizers.

Here’s the confirmed list so far:

Bear Republic

The venue is The Altman Building located at 135 West 18th Street in the Chelsea neighborhood. It is an official New York City Landmark building, built in 1896 as the carriage house for the famous B. Altman department store.

B. Altman & Company was founded in 1865 by Benjamin Altman. It officially closed on December 31, 1989, vacating its block-long flagship store on Fifth Avenue in Midtown. It was one of the first American department stores with out-of-town branches, operating stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey and on Long Island.
