1st ‘Oktoberfest On the Hudson’ set

Oktoberfest: The autumnal rite of eating sausages and drinking a lot of beer.

NEW YORK — OK, that’s a ridiculous simplification overall, but it’s an accurate description for some of the smaller events. All across the U.S. and elsewhere, Oktoberfest events of all sizes and complexities will abound next month — street fests, small-pub specials, huge entertainment-and-consumption efforts. In this city, there are literally hundreds of such activities every year, but the inaugural “Oktoberfest On the Hudson” nevertheless will be getting a lot of attention because of its location, if for no other reason.

The event, hosted by World Yacht & Pier 81, will take place at Pier 81 at 41st Street and the Westside Highway from noon to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, September 18. An optional one-hour cruise on the river will be available to festival-goers, along with German beers, food and live entertainment.

Admission is $10 for a pier ticket or $15 for a combined ticket that includes the cruise. Tents and seating will be in place on the pier.

The beer menu:

• On tap: Gaffel Kolsch, Hofbrau, Jever, Radeberger and Weihenstephan.
• Bottled: Weihenstephan Vitus, Weihenstephan Korbinian and Augustiner Maximator.

The food menu:

Classic bratwurst, jalapeño smoked bratwurst, cheddar bratwurst, chicken bratwurst, hot dogs, hamburgers, pommes frites and Bavarian pretzels.
