Ancient wine vessel goes for $3.3 million

NEW YORK — See that box over there? No, it’s not a safety deposit gadget. It’s an ancient Chinese wine vessel.

Yep, and it brought $3.3 million from an online bidder at Christie’s this week, the highest price ever for an online bid for the iconic New York auction house. The previous record at Christie’s was $1.27 million for a Stradivari violin in April 2008.

The wine vessel, dated from the 12th-11th century BC, is covered with mythological dragons. Inscriptions include the names of the artisans who created it, as well as clan names of the people to whom it was dedicated.
