New bar has a theatrical flourish

21 Sep

NEW YORK — Jenny Miller at Timeout New York keeps an eye on the bar scene in all five boroughs, and sometimes comes up with something very much out of the ordinary. Here’s an example:

Mad mixologist Albert Trummer (Apotheke) is behind this theater-themed cocktail bar, with a drink list divided into five “acts.” An array of champagne cocktails comprise the opening number, vermouth stars in Act II, and a selection of tequilas and mescals make up Act III, followed by absinthes and then cachaças. The drama doesn’t stop at the menu: Jazz and classical musicians command a stage situated behind the main bar, and the mixologists present the drinks in playful ways; order something “mariachi style” and a sombrero-clad barkeep will pull ingredients out of a guitar case and blend drinks tableside. 114 Franklin Street between Church Street and West Broadway. Phone: (212) 334-3733.
