Ain’t that a kick in the head?

NEW YORK — The Big Apple may be the center of the universe to millions, but you’ll have to go clear cross-country to find the nation’s No. 1 cocktail bar, according to GQ magazine — which is based in Manhattan.

Editors at the magazine have selected the Zig Zag Cafe in Seattle after visiting 21 cities and 102 bars before selecting the winner, announced in the October issue.

If it seems as if in a nation of 300 million people, 50 states, and thousands of cities that visitng just 21 towns and 102 establishments isn’t a very comprehensive way of ascertaining the top watering hole in the U.S. of A., I’m with you. But, that’s what bar debates are all about.

Nevertheless, New Yorkers can chant “We’re No. 2!” once they realize the Angel’s Share bar (above right), at 8 Stuyvesant Street in the East Village, came in right behind the Zig Zag Cafe. It’s a Japanese-style spot with imaginative cocktails and hand-carved ice.

The remainder of GQ‘s top 10:

3. The Violet Hour, Chicago
4. Clover Club, Brooklyn
5. The Alembic, San Francisco
6. Death & Co., New York
7. PDT, New York
8. PX, Alexandria, VA
9. Comstock Saloon, San Francisco
10. Holeman & Finch, Atlanta

The Pegu Club came in at No. 22

Other awards:

The Best Spirit-Specific Cocktail Bars: Mayahuel, New York. “Scarred by bad tequila? Never had mescal? These guys can help.”

The Best Restaurant Cocktail Bars: Prime Meats, Brooklyn
