• Sheldrake Point takes a world Riesling title in Australia

CANBERRA, Australia — A Finger Lakes wine that already has been crowned as the state’s best wine in the New York Wine & Food Classic in August, has heaped on another honor.

Sheldrake Point’s 2008 Late Harvest Riesling has been named “Best Sweet Riesling In the World” at the 11th Canberra International Riesling Challenge, regarded as one of the world’s premier wine competitions. En route to the honor, it also was named “Best American Riesling” in the competition.

This is an international step up Sheldrake. Its 2004 (January) Riesling Ice Wine was awarded “Best North American Riesling” at the 2005 competition here. Sheldrake also has earned “Winery of the Year” honors at the New York Wine & Food Classic for two consecutive years. It also was named “Winery of the Year” by Wine & Spirits Magazine.

Sheldrake is located on the Cayuga Lake shore. The site was operated as an orchard and dairy farm from 1850 until the mid 1980s. The current operation was founded in 1997. It is licensed as a New York State Winery and owns and operates a 155-acre farm located at 7448 County Road 153 in Ovid. It has a vineyard of 44 acres planted to Vinifera vines, a winery producing 6,000 cases, and the Simply Red Bistro that serves American cuisine.
