• Some offbeat pairings at the wineries

29 Oct

You’ve probably tried wine and food pairings. Wine with seafood, beef, cheeses, fruits, soups, sushi … the list seems endless.

Now, add to it wine and candy pairings.

Yep. It’s part of Knapp Winery’s “Hallo-Wine Spooktacular Celebration,” set for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Saturday, Halloween weekend.

Visitors are invited to come in costume. The best costume judged by the end of the day will receive gifts. Homemade caramel apples will be sold, and scary silent movies will be shown in the still room.

The wine-and-Halloween candy pairing is only part of the schedule. Also included are by a mixology class using Knapp Spirits in a variety of drinks, and a pumpkin painting contest.

Knapp Winery is located at 2770 Ernsberger Road, Romulus. Phone: (800) 869-9271.

While we’re at it, we should tell you about the wine-and-cookies pairing event out on Long Island at Martha Clara Vineyards. It’s planned for Sunday, November 7, with a November 5 reservation deadline.

The cookies will come from Alley O’s, the organic cookie company based in Mount Sinai, Suffolk County. The wines will come from Martha Clara, an operation that also knows a thing or two about cookies since it is owned by the Entenmann family of bakery fame.

The event will consist of five different 45-minute demonstrations that include samplings of cookies and wine. Tickets are $15 per person plus tax in advance ($10 plus tax for wine club members and guests) or $20 plus tax at the door. Martha Clara is located at 6025 Sound Avenue in Riverhead. Phone: (631) 298-0075.

If you can’t make it out to the Finger Lakes for this event, TasteSpot.com offers this video showing you how to pair wine and Halloween candy on your own.
