• Rolling out the barrel at Keuka Spring

05 Nov

PENN YAN, NY — The end of summer doesn’t mean the end of winery visiting. At any number of the nearly 300 wineries in New York, tastings and other events go on through the holiday period.

At Keuka Spring Vineyards, located in the Finger Lakes, for example, the annual Holiday Barrel Tasting will be held the weekend of December 4-5. It’s a behind-the-scenes chance to sample exclusive, small-group tastings with the winemaking team during which visitors get to compare bottled vintages with barrel samples of the upcoming 2010 vintage.

A feature of this year’s tasting will include a sampling Keuka Spring’s Gewurztraminer wines, including their double-gold-medal 2008 Gewurztraminer, which also won the “Best White Wine in America” award in the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Owners Len and Judy Wiltberger have been producing premium wines since they founded Keuka Spring in 1985.

“Along with the library tastings we have in the summer, this is a way for people to have a fun and interactive experience learning about our wine and the winemaking process behind it,” said winemaker Mark Wiltberger. “It’s held in the barrel room, where the wine actually is made, and offers guests the opportunity to learn a few winemaking secrets.”

A $25 admission fee includes the barrel tasting, a complimentary wine glass, and an hors d’oeuvres reception. Discounts are available for Keuka Spring case and wine club members. Reservations, which are required, may be made by phone at (315) 536-3147.
