HECTOR, NY — Some familiar names are bouncing around the Hector Wine Company. The enterprise has just opened at 5610 State Route 414 in this Schuyler County village, and is pouring six wines from the 2009 vintage.
The owners are Jason Hazlitt and Justin Boyette. They are using grapes grown at nearby Sawmill Creek Vineyards.
The name? Hazlitt is a cousin of the family that owns Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards on Seneca Lake. He and Boyette have been working on their winery concept since 2007. Sawmill Creek Vineyards, which also is owned by the Hazlitt family, supplies a variety of Finger Lakes wineries.
Boyette gained local notice as assistant winemaker at nearby Atwater Vineyards, before becoming Hector’s winemaker. Hazlitt is the grower and marketer. Selections at Hector’s year-round tasting room are Merlot, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. The fee is $3 for six samples.
Tasting room hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and Thursday (closed Tuesday and Wednesday), 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Phone: (607) 387-1045.
