• Brit-style pub for historic Albany spot

08 Dec

ALBANY, NY — A local restaurateur with an entrepreneurial bent plans to turn the city’s oldest building into a Brit-style bar.

Matt Baumgartner, owner/operator of two Bombers Burrito Bar restaurants as well as the ultra-casual Wolff’s Biergarten, is completing negotiations with the non-profit company that owns the Quackenbush House, a circa 1730 brick structure on the edge of the city’s theater district. It has housed a series of restaurants in recent decades, but is currently vacant.

He plans to call it the Olde English Pub and serve only beer and wine along with its English food menu. His Wolff’s Biergarten, located several blocks north on Broadway, serves German beer, wine and German food. Baumgartner will own the business with James Vann and Demetra Vann, his partners in the beergarden, and Mark Graydon, the beergarden’s general manager.

Renovation plans are targeted to begin in January and allow for an opening on April 29, the day Prince William of England is to marry model Kate Middleton. Veddy, veddy British.
