HIGHLAND MILLS, NY — Palaia Vineyards, currently closed for a brief winter break, plans to reopen to the public on Friday of this week.
The winery’s winter hours are noon to 10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday until May. A variety of live music events, accompanied by tastings, will be held throughout the winter. This Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m. is “Ugly Sweater Night.”
Palaia has just released a new white blend called Lineage it is offering for sampling. Early reports are of a pleasing, crisp and citrusy wine.
However, the most attractive thing on the event menu for me is the january 25 “The Great Lucy Look-Alike Grape Stomp, honoring the classic 1956 “I Love Lucy” episode (“Lucy’s Italian Movie“) in which Lucille Ball wound up stomping grapes in a great wooden vat and wrestling with another woman in the mess.
Palaia is located at 10 Sweet Clover Road, Highland Mills, Orange County, about five miles north of the Woodbury Commons Outlet Stores on Route 32 just off the NYS Thruway. Go here for specific directions.
