PITTSFORD, NY — Kegged wine could be the newest trend in food and drink coming to your neighborhood establishment. In the past 12 months, kegged wine has become a hot seller in bars in New York City and San Francisco. Now, Wegmans is getting on board with its Pittsford restaurant, Next Door Bar and Grille.
Josh Miles, the sommellier at Next Door, lined up his restaurant to be the first in Rochester to carry wine on draught. Next Door has been offering two kegged wines this year, including a Riesling from the Finger Lakes and a white blend from California. But the goal for Next Door is to offer their own house blend, straight from high-quality Finger Lakes fruit.
“The Finger Lakes is producing some amazing wine,” Miles said on blending day earlier this week. “Wegmans saw fit to partner with one of the best producers making that amazing wine.”
Miles is talking about Heart & Hands Wine Company, a small producer on Cayuga Lake that focuses on Pinot Noir and Riesling. Next Door’s best-selling wine is Heart & Hands’ Riesling. So Miles approached owner and winemaker Tom Higgins to help create a blend for Next Door’s kegs.
