• NYS wines shine in Florida test

New York State wines collected 150 medals — 14 of them Double Gold — in the Florida State Fair International Wine & Grape Competition in Tampa this week.

Eight of the Double Golds also were included in the final Sweepstakes round (noted by as asterisk). Leading the way were Lakewood Vineyards and Lucas Vineyards. Overall, the competition included more than 1,000 entries from 34 states and nine foreign countries.

Lakewood, on Seneca Lake, received Double Golds for its 2009 Riesling*, 2009 Dry Riesling* and 2009 Vignoles. It also won a Gold for its 2009 Chardonnay, along with a Silver and three Bronze medals.

Lucas, on Cayuga Lake, received Double Golds for 30th Anniversary Sparkling Wine*, Miss Behavin, and 2009 Cayuga White, as well as seven Silver and six Bronze medals.

Other Double Gold wines from New York that made it into the Sweepstakes round were Heron Hill Winery 2008 Riesling Ingle Vineyard, Knapp Winery 2009 Vignoles (Estate Grown, Cayuga Lake), Ledge Rock Hill Winery 2009 Marquette (a new winery with a “Minnesota” variety wine), Liberty Vineyards Diamond, and Thousand Islands Winery 2010 Frontenac (another “Minnesota” variety).
