Send us your announcements and pictures if you’ve got a new or re-worked place for drinks and gatherings anywhere in New York State.

677 Broadway

Albany, NY

ALBANY — Anyone interested in upscale late-night music and cocktails doesn’t have much choice in the Capital Region except during the Saratoga thoroughbred racing season.

Booming beer joints, yes. Loud ethnic or gay bars, sure. But a place where you won’t feel out of place wearing a jacket, ordering a classic malt or well-made cocktail that doesn’t have an idiotically faddish name? A place where you can get something more than routine finger foods with your drinks late in the evening? Rare.

Blessedly, there is a slight ray of hope. Angelo’s 677 Prime has moved into that under-served niche.

The plush restaurant, located on the edge of downtown Albany (with easy access from Interstate 787 for those who are not city dwellers), is always awash with dining patrons, and it offered some later-hours specials. But its new marketing program, “Prime Cocktails After Dark,” is serious stuff. Complimentary finger foods and a DJ the first of every month, a menu of light food from 9 to 11 p.m. Fridays, cocktail specials at the bar only from 9 to close. Different music will be featured each Friday evening. And, in a nice touch, the late-evening valet parking price will be dropped from the usual $5 to $3 during that time.

Will the new marketing idea work? Given the long track record of owner Angelo Mazzone at 677 Prime and his numerous other restaurants and catering spots, it’s probably a very safe bet it will.

Looking forward to checking it out…and you’re right, this niche is extremely under-served. So much so that a lot of people forgot this clientele even existed, outside of Saratoga.
