Finger Lakes ‘winery’ for sale

27 Dec

WATKINS GLEN — Cascata Winery, founded in Schuyler County in the 1990s, is up for sale.

Before you get ready to indulge your fantasies about running a winery, be aware that the $329,000 asking price isn’t the bargain it might seem to be for a full-fledged winery. Cascata has been contracting with Lakewood Vineyard to produce its wine. The property contains no vineyards or winemaking equipment.

What it does contain is a restored Victorian-era home that was the residence for various Sterling Salt Co. executives from the 1920s to the 1970s. It houses a tasting room, an art gallery, and a B&B called The Professors’ Inn.

Cascata was founded in 1995 by college professors Coralee Burch and the late David Hannie. Burch’s daughter and son-in-law, Sara and Kurtis Vondracek, have operated the Seneca Lake business for several years. Although it is closed for the season, prospective buyers can visit the property at 3651 State Route 14, two miles north of Watkins Glen. Phone: (607) 535-8000.
